BASTOGNE AT 85

BATTLE OF THE BULGE, 1944-45 & CHRISTMAS MARKETS

Dec. 10-17, 2029

Mardasson Memorial in Bastogne during a D-Day anniversary commemoration with American soldiers and flags. A powerful site visited on our 85th Anniversary Battle of the Bulge tour, December 2029.

Overview

BASTOGNE AT 85: BATTLE OF THE BULGE, 1944-45 & CHRISTMAS MARKETS

December 10-17, 2029

This fully guided and immersive tour will explore the people and places of the autumn and winter battles along the German frontier, specifically the Hurtgen Forest and the Bulge. Operation WACHT AM RHEIN, the December 1944 German offensive in Belgium’s Ardennes region, was the largest battle Americans participated in during WWII. In the end, Europe’s liberation from Nazi rule was made real through the defeat of German offensive power. We will walk the forests, ridges and towns, and follow the operations from the German border to their objective of Antwerp.

Following the D-Day landings in Normandy in June, and the breakout from the hedgerows in July and August, the Allied forces raced inexorably across France and Belgium in the late summer and early autumn. We begin in Antwerp, examining this key objective of both the Allies and the Axis. The greatest port in northern Europe, its control meant the difference between victory and defeat. In the months after its capture, however, as the Allies rebuilt its capacity, the advance stalled at the German frontier.

We next base out of Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle in French), just over the German border. In this city of Charlemagne (he is buried in the Cathedral), we will explore the battles that raged in November and December to get the Roer River dams and on to the Rhine. Some of the bloodiest fighting of the war occurred in these dark, forbidding forests and ravines. Luxembourg and Bastogne beckon next, as we explore the Bulge.

The events of December 1944, continue to inspire long after the guns have fallen silent. The battle in the rugged Ardennes drastically altered the conduct of the war and demonstrated the unflinching resolve of freedom-loving peoples. This Bulge tour will bring guests to the forests and fields; and villages, towns and cities where the Greatest Generation made their most indelible mark. From American infantrymen assaulting the ravines and Rangers climbing the hills of the Hurtgen to isolated units standing firm at intersections at Lanzerath and St Vith; from American paratroopers holding the lines at La Gleize and Bastogne to Patton’s armored columns slicing up from the South to relieve them. And so many other iconic sites, including the magnificent American Cemetery in Luxembourg City, where Patton still lies at the head of his men.

The WWII tour unfolds over eight days and seven nights with stories of all the Allied participants as well as those of the German defenders. In addition, EHE guests will visit towns to shop in the region’s magnificent Christmas Markets in the weeks prior to the holiday! The rich, verdant farmland, the quaint villages and the dramatic forests and mountains create an incredibly memorable backdrop for this Bulge tour.

Antwerp Christmas Market at night with illuminated historic guildhalls and festive lights. One of the beautiful Christmas markets visited on our Battle of the Bulge 85th Anniversary tour.

Tuesday, December 11, 2029

  • Breakfast, load luggage and depart Antwerp.
  • Drive southeast to the German border and across it into the forbidding terrain of the Hurtgenwald (Hurtgen Forest). Here, from November 1944 through January 1945, some of the toughest fighting of the war occurred and terrible weather compounded the restrictive terrain.
  • First, we visit Hill 400, what the US Rangers who captured it called “The Hill.” This high ground provides unparalleled views of much of the battle space.
  • Box lunch enroute.
  • Next, we’ll stand on the outskirts of Vossenack to examine the Kall River Valley and the Kall Trail where the most desperate fighting took place.
  • Our final stop is the nearby German Cemetery, where soldiers of this and the Bulge campaigns are buried, including one of the most senior commanders of the entire war.
  • From the Hurtgen we make the short drive north to the ancient city of Aachen/Aix-la-Chappelle and check-in to the premier hotel in the city. The Quellenhof was also the German HQ in the battle/siege here and the final building taken by the Americans.
  • Social hour at the hotel and then dinner on your own in the city of Charlemagne. Its ancient cobblestoned streets and piazzas hold a host of dining opportunities.
  • Aachen Hotel: Parkhotel Quellenhof (or similar).

Wednesday, December 12, 2029

  • Breakfast.
  • We have the day on our own to explore this marvelous city, its history and heritage and to partake in its wonderful Christmas Market.
  • The Aachen Christmas Market is a festive village surrounding the historic City Hall and UNESCO-listed Aachen Cathedral. Famous for its magical atmosphere, local artisans, and signature Printen gingerbread, the market is consistently ranked among Europe’s top 10. Visitors can enjoy daily from 11 am to 9 pm. Key highlights and tips:
  • Location: Centered around the Markt and Katschhof.
  • Must-Try Treats: Aachener Printen (specialty gingerbread), mulled wine (Glühwein), and Reibekuchen (potato pancakes).
  • Unique Finds: The market features iconic "witch" figures, handmade ornaments, and specialized ceramic houses.
  • Best Time to Visit: It is often less crowded on weekdays, though weekday evenings offer the best light displays.
  • Aachen’s Cathedral is a must-see and includes the burial place of Charlemagne, “Charles the Great,” who unified the West in the early 9th century. The Holy Roman Empire of a thousand years, the First Reich, was his creation.
  • Lunch and dinner on your own in the quaint city center.
  • Aachen Hotel: Parkhotel Quellenhof.

Thursday, December 13, 2029

  • Breakfast, load luggage and depart Aachen.
  • Drive to Hollerath, Germany and visit sites associated with the northern shoulder of the Bulge.
  • Hitler’s last great offensive in the West, Operation WACHT AM RHEIN, was an attempt to drive a wedge between the Allied forces, seize Antwerp and gain a negotiated peace. The battle that ensued would be America’s largest in history and end with the elimination of German offensive power.
  • Our first stop is the opening fight at Hollerath where the US 99th Division held off the 12th SS Panzer Division and its Corps.
  • Then we move down to the village of Lanzerath in Belgium, where a small American platoon of 20 men held off the spearheads of the entire 1st SS Panzer Division and its corps for the entire first day of 16 December. Though all were captured in the end, they completely wrecked the German timetable. It is the most decorated US platoon of the entire war.
  • We will have lunch on your own in the pretty town of Malmedy in its picturesque valley. The town has a wonderful small Christmas Market in the same square as all the restaurants, and we will have time to visit the shops.
  • In the afternoon, we follow the advance of Kampfgruppe Peiper of the 1st SS through the Baugnez crossroads (scene of the Malmedy Massacre), Trois Ponts, La Gleize and their halt by the 82nd Airborne at the bridge at Habiement.
  • Drive to our lodgings in Luxembourg City.
  • Luxembourg City was the headquarters of General Omar Bradley’s 12th Army Group and soon after he was joined by the headquarters of Lt General George Patton’s Third Army. Our hotel was where Bradley and Patton both had their apartments during the battle (when they were not on the road, especially the latter).
  • Social hour and dinner on your own in wonderful Old Luxembourg.
  • The city’s famous Christmas markets, three of them, are all located in the Old City and are open late.
  • Luxembourg City Hotel: Luxembourg Marriott Hotel Alfa (or similar).

Friday, December 14, 2029

  • Breakfast.
  • We begin the day driving to the St Vith area, a German-culture town in Belgium, just behind the forbidding Schnee (Snowy) Eifel.
  • Our first stops are in the Eifel, where the brand-new American 106th Division had just arrived, only days prior to the German attack. Their inexperience, at both the soldier and command levels, resulted in disaster. Over 10,000 Americans surrendered just days into the fight.
  • Next is the crossroads town of St Vith. Like Bastogne to the south, this town controlled the road network leading deeper into the Ardennes and to the Meuse River crossing sites beyond. The Americans made plans to defend both. Here it was a hodge-podge of units from several different divisions. One leader, Brigadier General Bruce Clarke, of the 7th Armored, took charge and made a masterful defense for days until directed to withdraw. But the Germans had been significantly delayed. In the woods we will see foxhole positions.
  • On return to Luxembourg City, we will visit the Luxembourg American Cemetery. One of our overseas American Battlefield Monument Commission sites, this one is the resting place for over 5,000 American soldiers including General George S. Patton, Jr.
  • Dinner and Christmas markets on your own in Luxembourg.
  • Luxembourg City Hotel: Luxembourg Marriott Hotel Alfa.

Saturday, December 15, 2029

  • Breakfast, load luggage and depart Luxembourg City.
  • We head northwest to the Belgian crossroads town of Bastogne. No other town is as associated with the battle as this one. It stands astride numerous road networks and its control is essential. Eisenhower hurried the 101st Airborne Division there, and it arrived just in time. Along with its attached units, most importantly a combat command of an armored division, the Screaming Eagles made history in their encircled defense.
  • The 101st Airborne (and its Band of Brothers) held off repeated German armored assaults for a week before being relieved by Patton’s Third Army coming up from the south.
  • This anniversary weekend is known as “’NUTS’ Weekend”, in honor of the reply given by the American commander when asked to surrender by the Germans. There will be celebrations throughout these days.
  • We will visit the main memorial and museum at the Mardasson, and various battle sites in the vicinity – including Bois Jacques/Foy where Easy Company fought, along with the relief by a regiment of Patton’s 4th Armored Division led by Colonel Creighton Abrams at Clochimont/Assenois.
  • Check-in to our centrally located hotel, just a block off the main town square, which will be filled with people here for the commemoration.
  • Dinner on your own in central Bastogne.
  • Bastogne Hotel: Hotel Melba (or similar).

Monday, December 17, 2029

  • Breakfast, load luggage and depart Bastogne.
  • We will arrive at Luxembourg City International Airport at 10 am and will drop guests there. This is equally central for those wishing to stay in Luxembourg City, or take a fast train to Paris, or head elsewhere. Please plan ongoing travel accordingly.
  • Expedition complete.
